What is a pizza? True, it’s originally an Italian treat, but now Italy can no longer claim exclusive rights to what pizza can be. Plenty of different countries and cultures have come up with their own version of pizza, with the US as an obvious example. And of course, there’s also the Mexican version of the pizza.
What Is Mexican Pizza?
The basic idea is that you have a pizza, but you also have lots of toppings that you’d normally find in traditional Mexican cuisine. So, if you replace Italian sausage with more traditional Mexican meats, it’s more of a Mexican pizza.
The traditional ingredients of Mexican pizza can include jalapeños and other similar peppers. You can also add beans and corn. Other ingredients can include various sauces such as the obvious salsa. As for the meat, that’s usually some ground pork or beef.
Put all those ingredients on some flat dough, and it’s a Mexican pizza. In fact, some even call it a Mexican pizza when they set these ingredients on a tortilla.
How Did Mexican Pizza Begin?
Despite the name, it didn’t really start out in Mexico at all. Instead, it was launched way back in the 1950s in San Antonio, Texas. That’s shouldn’t really be all that surprising, given the significant numbers of Hispanics in Texas whose family roots originated in Mexico.
Where Can You Find Mexican Pizza?
Quite a few restaurants offer their own take on Mexican pizza. Your best bet is to visit a Mexican restaurant, and find out if they offer their own unique pizza offerings. If their pizza comes loaded with traditional Mexican ingredients, they you can consider that a Mexican pizza.
The most obvious source of Mexican pizza these days is the ubiquitous Taco Bell. With so many locations scattered all around the world, it shouldn’t be difficult to find a Taco Bell location. Over the years, they’ve offered their Mexican pizza though it hasn’t become part of the permanent menu. But supposedly, it has entered the menu in April of 2022 and it’s for good this time. We will see if that’s true.
Philadelphia is a good city to try find Mexican pizza as well. There’s Rosario’s in a quiet little neighborhood in South Philadelphia. Owners Margarita Jeronimo and Aaron Del Rosario offer their own take on pizza. They grew up in Mexico City and in Puebla, and they now have rather popular pizzas on their menu.
Then there’s also the San Lucas Pizzeria, just a few blocks south of Rosario’s. It’s been around since 2005. Another option in this city is Mr. Taco, started by Carlos Gomez who grew up in Hidalgo.
In Washington, D.C., there’s Anafre, which actually started out with a focus on seafood. If you’re in LA, California, you can also try Asada Pizza. This opened in 2020, right in the middle of the Covid mess.
And if you’re in the UK, there’s also the Amigos Mexican Food brand with various locations scattered all around the country. With the reasonable Amigos Mexican Food menu prices, their offerings have become very popular.
Sure, there are only a handful of these restaurants that offer Mexican pizza, but who knows? Maybe in a few years, many other Mexican restaurants and pizza parlors will follow suit!
Is the Taco Bell Mexican Pizza Good?
That’s a matter of personal preference. The Taco Bell version is actually quite unexpected. It features a combination of beef with beans and cheese, set between 2 fried tortillas. Then they add toppings such as taco sauce, olives, peppers, tomatoes, and more cheese.
It was good enough that when Taco Bell then discontinued their Mexican pizza, some fans signed petitions for Taco Bell to bring it back. The petitions didn’t really work at first, since the Mexican pizza disappeared from the Taco Bell menu for 2 years. But now it’s supposed to be back for good.
Its fans refer to these treats as basically perfectly ratio-ed nachos. It features a nicely even distribution of ingredients, so each bite is consistently good, and you get a nice crunch every time.
Is the Mexican Pizza Vegan?
This depends on which pizza parlor you visit. At Taco Bell, it isn’t really vegan at all. After all, Taco Bell isn’t exactly renowned as a vegan haven. Their Mexican pizzas generally feature beef and cheese, and the sauce is usually dairy-based. With the beef, it’s not even vegetarian.
But if you’re a vegan, you can always go online and find a recipe for vegan Mexican pizza. Or you can check out a simple Mexican pizza recipe, and customize it to suit your own food preferences. You can start off by taking out the beef and cheese. You can then use some sort of plant-based cheese instead, and then put on some mixture of black beans and green beans to replace the ground beef. Add a simple tomato sauce, and you’re good to go!
