How to Improve Movement in the Office

Working in an office is a stationary role and often doesn’t require a lot of movement or walking around. Being in a desk job won’t be the place where you’ll hit 10,000 steps a day, but it should still be possible to increase steps and movement throughout the day.

Sitting down all day, in the same chair, can be quite boring and can bring a sluggish feeling to your body and mind. Being active is promoted to awaken the mind and keep you feeling as alert as possible during a busy workday.

Using the time away from your desk in a positive way is just one method to be active and move your body. If you’re unsure on how to fit this into your workday, here are a few of our suggestions.

Ditch the lift

Not all workplaces have stairs, but for those who are working on the 2nd or 3rd floor. It’s time to ditch the lift and start taking the stairs.

Even if you only use them a few times a day, it’s a great way to gently increase your heart rate and any additional exercise during the day is a positive. You could even go the extra mile and make further stair journeys during lunch breaks.

Send less emails

The workplace is a busy place, so the time isn’t always available. In the event that you do have time, if you have a question, go over to the persons desk rather than sending an email.

Emails are great, they save on paper which helps the environment but can become a method that makes us a little bit lazy. Taking the small detour to a different department is enough to stretch the legs and get a change of scenery.

Take a walk

Lunch breaks are the time to unwind and take a well deserved breather and if you can do that outside, it’s even better.

Being outside and getting fresh air whilst on a walk has many benefits.  You’ll be undertaking more exercise, taking yourself from a stuffy office to the outdoors and proactively doing what you can to gain the most focus.

Move & Work

Rather than taking the time out of the day to walk on breaks, why not walk and work?
