Autotransformer Starter Theory

The auto-transformer starter can be utilized with any squirrel cage induction motor that provides power to all three taps of the three-phase autotransformer starter. The motor can be directly coupled to the transformer’s secondary coil with this starter.

The auto-tap transformer’s cut off the starting voltage and supply to the motor at 50 percent, 65 percent, or 80 percent of a low voltage. Because the motor is attached to the secondary winding of something like the transformer starter’s continuous acceleration, the current flowing is always low compared to the motor armature voltage.

If the motor is attached to the transformer’s 50% tap, the motor current will be reduced to 50% of the modest beginning current. On the other hand, the line current will be just 25% of the modest initial current. The autotransformer in the circuit is responsible for the differences in motor and line current.

Full-voltage starters, also known as across-the-line starters or direct-on-line (DOL) start, attach the motor to a power line and are full-voltage non-reversing (FVNR). Only single-phase motors up to 5 HP at 320 VAC and three-phase engines up to 10 HP at 460 and 575 VAC can be started manually.
